Birthday Special! How Sunny Deol was the only superstar to challenge the 3 Khans for more than a decade

Sunny Deol is regaled fans over the years with some truly marvellous performances. From being a romantic hero to a rugged action star, the original macho man of Bollywood has given many memorable performances. Unlike the beefed up heroes of today, who looked too curated, he has a raw vulnerable vibe about him that was extremely appealing. Sunny Deol comes across as a very simple innocent person completely unaffected by the showsha of showbiz. The actor has a crazy fan following in North India. He has donned many hats of an actor, producer, writer and now a politician. He recently launched his son, Karan Deol who has his simple vibe. Throughout the 1990s, he was the only actor who constantly challeged the stardom of the three Khans, Shah Rukh, Aamir and Salman. Here is a detailed look...

1990

Aamir Khan was at the peak of his stardom with Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak winning over the nation. His film, Dil became the biggest grosser of 1990 making approximately Rs 10,00,00,000 (nett) at the ticket counters. Songs like O Priya Priya and Dum Duma Dum were hits. The only film that came close to Dil was Sunny Deol's Ghayal. The film was a violent one and not advised for kids but it made Rs 9,50,00,000 at the box office. Unlike Dil, Ghayal also swept the awards that year. People still adore his performance as Ajay Mehra.

1997

After Aamir Khan, it was the turn of Shah Rukh Khan to rule over Bollywood. The actor was coming off the mammoth success of Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge with another YRF production, Dil Toh Pagal Hai. The film was a rage with teens and made close to Rs 60 crores in India and additional Rs 12 crores from the foreign market. It was a huge hit as compared to its budget of almost Rs nine crores. That year, Sunny Deol beat Shah Rukh Khan as Border raked in a lot of moolah. The patriotic flick made Rs 66 crore worldwide with Rs 40 crore plus coming from the domestic market. Border will remain as one of the finest films made in the country.

2001

Bollywood's macho man had a stupendous 2001 with Gadar - Ek Prem Katha beating both Lagaan and Kabhie Khushi Kabhie Gham at the box-office. The film is iconic for the hand pump scene, songs like Udd Kaale Kaava Tere and the action scenes. It made Rs 70 crores in comparison to Lagaan's Rs 30 crore. It was higher than K3G as well. In fact, his film Indian made Rs 42.6 crore that was also more than Lagaan.

Well, this is how Sunny Deol proved that he is an actor with immense box office prowess. We definitely want a sequel of Gadar, Indian and Damini and we're confident they will have a lot of interest. Stay tuned to BL for more scoops and updates!
