Hotel Mumbai: Director Anthony Maras reveals the reason behind the delayed Indian release [EXCLUSIVE]
26/11, the date still sends a shiver down my spine. Even though I was a teenager and far from the actual incident, I was terrified by the visual horror that streamed on various news channels. I don't want to think about it for a minute, but it's important to remember and value the lives lost, remember the brave hearts who sacrificed their lives to keep us safe. 26/11 is the dark day when the terrorists entered Taj Mahal hotel and other significant places in Mumbai, and started the brutal terror attack. Within minutes, there spread resonating chaos that still haunts each and every one of us forever.
And it didn't just affect us Indians. Anthony Maras, the Australian director, has some memories attached to the incident as well. Being born in a family whose memories consist of war and wartime, Anthony grew up amongst the stories of brutal human horror. Such stories made his bedtime stories and like it's said, once you are hooked, everything and everywhere you see, it's the same story you see. He felt an unruly attraction towards such stories and connected with their pain.
An award-winning short filmmaker, Anthony always wanted to narrate incidents and stories of brutal horrors through his vision but in the most humane way possible. A friend of his had a close call with the 26/11 incident that gave him the idea of creating a visual representation of the same. Anthony Maras' Hotel Mumbai is releasing this Friday. The film has already seen the light of the day outside India. But it took time to hit the silver screens in India.
BollywoodLife got in touch with the director and asked him the reason for the same. The Director EXCLUSIVELY told us, "It was scheduled to release last year and I wanted it to release in India first but the American distributor, Weinstein Company went bankrupt last year, as a result of all the scandal that many films suffered and ours was one of them. They weren't able to distribute the film because of bankruptcy. And also, we were still filming it. After the scandal hit, we were editing the film. We had to work every day on the VFX while we were waiting for the company to come out of bankruptcy. That was quite moving for the whole team. But we just had to keep going and power through it. And as a result of that bankruptcy and all the legal problems, there were a lot of effects on the distribution (of the film). And the most important effect was that it affected the legal distribution rights in India. And hence the delay. I was very disappointed as the first place I wanted to screen the film was in India."
