Shabana Azmi's mom veteran actor Shaukat Azmi passes away; celebs offer condolences

Shabana Azmi's mom Shaukat Azmi who was a veteran theatre and film actor passed away on Friday evening. She suffered a cardiac arrest at her Mumbai residence. The lady, 93 had been unwell for a long time. She was having age-related problems. She is survived by her daughter, actress Shabana Azmi and son cinematographer Baba Azmi. She was married to famous Urdu poet and lyricist Kaifi Azmi who died in 2002. Javed Akhtar confirmed her demise to PTI. He said, "She was 93 and was having one problem after another. She was admitted to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital. For certain days she was in the ICU and then she was out of ICU. It was all age related. Ultimately they brought her home. She wanted to come back to her own room where she stayed for a day or two and then passed away. Shabana is in Mumbai." Celebs have condoled her death on Twitter. Check out the tweets...

Shaukat Azmi was born in Uttar Pradesh in erstwhile Hyderabad State but grew up in Aurangabad. She was married to Kaifi Azmi at a young age. The couple endured a lot of hardships before Kaifi got a break in Bollywood as a lyricist. She also began working in theatre and films. Her role in Umrao Jaan is remembered by many.
