2019 Recap: Thalaivar Rajinikanth, Thalapathy Vijay, Thala Ajith and Darling Prabhas — the big names were the the BIG South Newsmakers of the year

The end of 2019 dawns and with it, we no doubt tend to reflect on all the big moments from the past 12 months. Of course, if you're a diehard movie-buff like us, then headlines about films and filmstars would be high on your nostalgic trip. So, assuming that you are one (or else, why in the world would you be here), it's only fair to take a look at those who made the most noise from the every film industry across the globe. On that note, it gives us great pleasure to list down the top newsmakers from the South in 2019 (yeah...we are generous like that, not wanting you to take the effort of sifting through tons of news articles and all). From Thalaivar Rajinikanth and Thalapathy Vijay to Thala Ajith and Darling Prabhas the biggest names down South grabbed the most headlines. So, without further ado, here are the big South Newsmakers of 2019:

1.) Rajinikanth returns to from with Petta

After back-to-back disappointing outings last year with Kaala and 2.0 (superhit in Hindi, but barely recovered its cost in other versions despite being the highest Kollywood grosser in history), Rajini came back in roaring fashion in 2019 not only with a certified blockbuster, but also one of his best roles and movies in years. More importantly, the audience got to see the superstar as we've come to know and love him over the years, with talented Director Karthik Subbaraj tapping into his wealth of Rajiniisms like few have of late, and emerging on the other side with a modified, newer and fresher Thalaivar for Gen Z.

2.) Ajith also comes back to form with a double whammy

Thala also suffered a huge setback with the disastrous Vivegam in 2018, and just like Rajinikanth, he, too, needed a shot in the arm to remind everyone, especially younger viewers, why he's still a major force in Tamil cinema while Director Siva needed to prove that he could still deliver those big hits with Ajith after Veeram and Vedalam. Fortunately, Viswasam ticked all the right boxes for both the superstar and his Director, blazing all the way to blockbuster glory at the box-office. If that wasn't enough, then Ajith followed it up with another successful outing

3.) Vijay-Atlee combo delivers their third successive blockbuster with Bigil

Can these two stalwarts of Tamil cinema ever put a foot wrong, more so when the come together. Atlee combined with Vijay for ta third time after Theri and Mersal, and Bigil went down the same blockbuster path as the other two, getting showered by love from both the audience and critics.

4.) Prabhas cements his post-Baahubali pan-India stardom with the Hindi audience

4.) Prabhas cements his post-Baahubali pan-India stardom with the Hindi audience

Saaho may not have worked in Telugu or Tamil, but was a raging hit in Hindi, registering similar footfalls in some territories as those witnesses by big Khan starrers, and showing everyone that the Hindi-belt audience has really warmed up to Prabhas after Baahubali 2. Truth be told, the film would've been a success elsewhere too had it's budget, and subsequent distribution costs not skyrocketed out of control.

5.) Kaithi is hailed as one of the best Indian action films ever made

Director Lokesh Kanagaraj showed one and all that his taut thriller, Maanagaram, was no flash-in-the-pan debut, following it up with not only a better film, but an out-and-out masterpiece in Kaithi the action sequences, edge-of-the-seat thrills, and plot development gelled together for a pure tour de force while also giving Karthi his best role in years.

6.) Venkatesh still a big draw after all these years

Though Daggubati Venkatesh may not have ever achieved the super-stardom of his Tollywood counterparts like Chiranjeevi, Pawan Kalyan, or his own cousin, Nagarjuna, Victory Venkatesh has nevertheless consistently churned out hit after hit in his long career, and continues to do so till this day. Two big hits in a year where he played the lead in both F2: Fun and Frustration and Venky Mama is no mean feat at 59 particularly with so many younger stars hogging the market.

7.) Jersey's critical acclaim, box-office success and Bollywood remake

A sports drama done well, irrespective of the sport, always clocks with domestic moviegoers, and Jersey was no different, so much so that Shahid Kapoor has been signed for its Hindi adaptation. It also showed that Nani has it in him to deliver thoughtful, meaningful, matured performances when the script demands it.
