Mira Nair demands release of A Suitable Boy actress Sadaf Jafar

The whole nation is debating about the government's recently passed Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC). Protests were held in all parts of the nation and they turned ugly at places. In Uttar Pradesh, five people were reported dead in the police firing and there are claims of many being detained by the cops. As per reports, A Suitable Boy actress Sadaf Jafar was also beaten by the cops. Her family reported that he was beaten with a baton and the police kicked her on the stomach that led to internal bleeding. Sadaf is also the UP Congress media spokesperson. Filmmaker Mira Nair took to Twitter to extend her support for Sadaf. She said, "This is our India now Appalling: our #SuitableBoy actress, Sadaf Jafar, beaten and jailed for peaceful protest in Lucknow! Join me in demanding her release (sic)."

It is not only the common man who is revolting against the government's order; a number of celebs have also taken to social media. People have slammed the bill as it excludes Muslims. After the attacks on protesting students in Delhi's Jamia Millia Islamia, celebs like Ajay Devgn, Anurag Kashyap, Ayushmann Khurrana, Mahesh Bhatt, Swara Bhasker, Anubhav Sinha, Dia Mirza, Lisa Ray and Parineeti Chopra strongly condemned the police atrocity. As per reports, more than 20 people have died all over India in these protests.

Mira Nair's A Suitable Boy wrapped up shoot last week in Lucknow. The film is the celluloid version of Vikram Seth's bestseller of the same name. It will be shown in six parts and stars Ishaan Khatter, Tabu and newbie Tanya Maniktala. The story is about a university student Lata in 1951, a year when India was establishing itself as a nation free from colonial rule. Andrew Davies has written the screenplay of the same.
