Recap 2019: Gully Boy, Chhichhore, Bala - Bollywood films that imparted life lessons

There is no doubt that 2019 has been a fantastic year for Bollywood. We have had many blockbuster films that had excellent content as well. People have proved that they love entertainment and more so if it is packaged in a thoughtful manner. Here are our five films of the year that gave us a message along with great entertainment.

Gully Boy

Zoya Akhtar's Gully Boy had to be the most uplifting film of the year. Ranveer Singh aka Murad had a murad (dream) to become a rapper and all the hustle in the world was worth it. The actor aced the role of the Dharavi lad who loves to listen to Eminen. A personal favourite is a scene where Murad pens down lyrics after he is unable to ask his car owner's daughter why she is so broken and distraught as he takes her home. From showing the courage to quit the stable job of an AC salesman to standing up to his naysayers in the world of Mumbai rap, Ranveer Singh's Murad told us that no dream is too big. Ranveer Singh's nuanced subtle performance was the icing on the cake.

Chhichhore

The inability to accept failure is something we discuss on a regular basis. Chhichhore dealt with how the stress of competitive exams can snuff the mojo out of young people. The film gave us a message in fortitude and resilience in the most entertaining manner. Filmmaker Nitesh Tiwari put together a fabulous ensemble cast who literally lived their characters. Hailed as one of the best films of the year, Chhichhore had a message for kids and adults alike.

Bala

Do looks determine a person? Ayushmann Khurrana Bala's touched upon this topic with the tale of a balding young man and a dark-complexioned girl in small-town India. The film had fab performances from Bhumi Pednekar and Yami Gautam as well. Bala reminded us that external beauty is not an indicator of how much we can achieve in our personal and professional lives.

Article 15

Ayushmann Khurrana's Article 15 was another film that left us with food for thought. It was an eye-opener for many who live in urban cities and are unaware of the discrimination that people have to face at the grassroots level. Brilliant writing, dialogues and acting made the film a top-notch cinematic experience. Article 15 left us thinking and how!

De De Pyaar De

While might have slammed the film for objectification, there is no denying that De De Pyaar De gave us a fresh take on modern relationships. It showed us that age is irrelevant as long as two hearts connect and how one can move on gracefully. De De Pyaar De told us happiness and love deserve a second chance and there's nothing to be ashamed of in a failed marriage.
