Chhapaak: 'We may have played with the narrative in terms of the timeline,' says director Meghna Gulzar on Laxmi Agarwal's story [EXCLUSIVE]

After Raazi, Meghna Gulzar is ready to present a yet another hard-hitting project with her next film, Chhapaak. The movie is based on the life of an acid attack survivor, Laxmi Agarwal. Laxmi was just 15 when she was attacked by a 32-year-old man named Nadeem Khan (Guddu), for rejecting his advances. Meghna brought Deepika Padukone on-board to play the central character and Vikrant Massey to play her husband. Right from the time she began co-writing the script till the end, Meghna just had these two names in her mind for Chhapaak. In an exclusive conversation with us, the filmmaker clarified that Rajkummar Rao being offered Chhapaak was just a media created story. She also informed us about Laxmi and her husband Alok Dixit's reaction to the final cut of Chhapaak. Apart from talking about these things, we asked the director if any creative liberties were taken to reach out to a wider audience.

Putting her point across, Meghna told us, "Not at all. When you are making a film on a real-life incident and if you want to take creative liberties, then make fiction. You can't distort the facts. As far as this case is concerned, there is no distortion of facts at all. Yes, we may have played with the narrative in terms of the timeline and maybe not gone chronologically, maybe shuffled a few instances up and down, but, none of the facts has been distorted."

Is Deepika Padukone really playing Ranveer Singh's on-screen wife in 83? Hear it from the actor himself

Meghna Gulzar stated that with a superstar like Deepika Padukone on-board, the message of acid attack violence can reach out to a wider audience. But, was Deepika's star power the reason Meghna cast her in the film? "No, it is just an added benefit," said the filmmaker.

Chhapaak releases on January 10 and clashes with Ajay Devgn and Kajol's Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior at the box office.
