Code M web series review: Jennifer Winget dons a soldier's uniform in this cat-and-mouse game

Hindi films and TV/web series based on army officers have been done in abundance, but very few of them feature female soldiers; lesser still when you only consider the small screen. And if you were to consider how many of them feature a female soldiers as the lead protagonist, then the brilliantly The Test Case, starring Nimrat Kaur, is the only other show that comes to mind. In this scenario, one of television's most successful and highest paid actresses, Jennifer Winget, dons the army uniform for her debut web series, Code M. So, is it her first outing as a solider successful? Well, based on the first three episodes that I was shown at an exclusive advanced screening, the answer is mostly in the affirmative.

What's it about

Jennifer plays Major Monica Mehra, a lawyer in the Indian Army, tasked to investigate and file a report on the recent killing of a suspected terrorist, Asif, near the Rajasthan-Pakistan border, by a handful of officers. What appears to be a routine open-and-shut case throws up several sordid details as Monica keeps digging deeper.

What's hot

Jennifer Winget carries the entire show on her shoulder, mixing beauty with badassery, and coming out trumps nine times our of ten. She's well supported by Tanuj Virwani, Rajat Kapoor and the rest the cast, most of my high feature relatively new faces. Shubhra Chatterji, Aniruddha Guha Aparna Nadig, Sulagna Chatterjee script has enough merit to keep you hooked and throws up enough surprised to make you keep guessing.

What's not

Akshay Choubey's direction tends to drag a bit by the third episode itself, making us wonder if this was better suited to a 5-6 episode format, and has been needlessly stretched to 8 episodes. The technical department also leaves a lot of be desired, with the the cinematography and production design appearing quite tacky, and the editing resorting to outdate hacks like multiple jump cuts as an alternative for a proper flow.

BL Verdict

On the whole, Code M looks like an interesting show (based on the first three episodes that I saw) that's let down somewhat by a bit of shoddy technical work. Nevertheless, a good story is still q good story, and Jennifer Winget more than makes up for the lack of technical dexterity as also her Director's intermittent unimaginativeness. I'm going with 3 out of 5 stars.
