Colin Farrell on The Gentlemen: I'm pulled into this web of nefarious actions and reactions and therein lies the tale of my character
Colin Farrell has built a reputation in Hollywood for pulling off quirky, edgy characters with effortless ease. Films Phone Booth, In Bruges, The Lobster and Horrible Bosses have displayed his aptitude to mould into such roles and fondness for movies that present him an opportunity to pull them off. Now, he's set to add another such part to the list with The Gentlemen, and having a Director like Guy Ritchie at the helm, who's built a career out of serving up deliciously quirky, deviously edgy and devilishly twisted characters in dark crime comedies, only puts the icing on the cake for a match made in dark heaven.
Fortunately, BollywoodLife was able to lay its hands on some rare footage, where Colin Farrell talks about both his role and working with Ritchie. Watch it below:
Speaking about how his character, Coach, gets involved in the heist (the basic premise of the film) and why he becomes the fall guy, Farrell said, "The lads commit the crime, his boys, and they're not very good at it. They post it on YouTube not very clever it's found out who do it, then I fall on the sword, I take a bullet for them. I go and see Charlie (Hunnam)'s character, Ray, and have a word with him, saying, 'The boys don't know what they're doing, so avail of me as you will until the debt is paid, whatever the debt may be. So, I'm pulled into this web of nefarious actions and reactions and therein lies the tale of my character."
On working with Director Guy Ritchie's unique style, Colin added, "For me, a Guy Ritchie film, you know...apart from the aesthetic, the world in which the story takes place, particularly with reference to loans and debts, everything likes in the script. Because I know he's a huge part in the construction of the script and the dialogues and he's even come up with bits and pieces today (this interview was recorded between shitting for the film), not directly on the set, but the few times I've walked by the set, and I hear him suggest a few likes of dialogue that aren't written in the script, and they're all, of course, in keeping with sensibility, the continuity, with what's being demonstrated, with what's written on the pages, and it's tasty stuff, it's really, really tasty stuff. I remember the first time that I saw of his was Lock, Stock (Lock, Stick and Two Smoking Barrels), and just the whiff, the jazz...you know...and everyone kind of bouncing off each other, all these different notes being hit simultaneously...so, yeah."
Well, it sure does look like Colin Farrell is on a high after working with Guy Ritchie, and given the Director's past efforts, especially in this realm, we really can't blame him, can we. The Gentlemen releases on Friday, 31st January, and also stars Matthew McConaughey, Charlie Hunnam, Henry Golding, Michelle Dockery, Jeremy Strong, Eddie Marsan and Hugh Grant.
