Deepika Padukone on '83: I don't like saying that I have only 5-6 scenes, but I'm having to put it out there just to manage people's expectations [Exclusive]
With films like Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela, Bajirao Mastani and Padmaavat, Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh have found a special place in the hearts of the Hindi-cinema audience both somatically and overseas, and moviegoers eagerly look forward to watching them together both on and off screen. Their marriage has only added to the enamor of their pairing. Now, with '83 being their first film together post marriage the expectations are sky high, but with it, the curiosity is also afoot as Deepika was quite a late entry in the project, and the couple's scores of fans have been wondering if she has a guest appearance in the Kabir Khan directorial, or if her part as Kapil Dev's wife, Romi Bhatia, is a full-fledged role.
Well, the cat is finally out of the bag as in an exclusive interview with BollywoodLife, Deepika has not only shed light about the length of her role in '83 but has also opened up about her motivation to play the character.
"No, it's not a full-fledged role. However, it was important for me to do this film because I've seen with my parents the kind of relationship and contribution my mother has had toward my father's success. So, when Kabir came to me with this film, it was important for me that people saw the contribution that Romi has had in Kapil Dev's life. It's important for us to throw light on the contribution or role that family plays in one's success, and it's for those reasons that I chose to this film. I want to manage people's expectations in terms of my screentime, although it's not something I like talking about or discussing. I don't like saying that I have only 5-6 scenes, I don't like calling it a guest appearance because, eventually, a film is a film, with every character, every technician making the movie. That being said, just so that I manage people's expectations, I'm having to put it out there."
Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh have now almost become as iconic a pair in Bollywood as Shah Rukh Khan-Kajol, Amitabh Bachchan-Rekha, Dharmendra-Hema Malini, Govinda-Karisma Kapoor, Dilip Kumar-Vyjayanthimala, Raj Kapoor-Nargis or Anil Kapoor-Madhuri Dixit. So, whether it be a full-fledged role, extended guest appearance or just a cameo, it's always exciting to see the real-life couple paired opposite each other on screen. More so, like Deepika said, it's not the size but contribution of the role toward the film that matters. On the work front, the actress will next be seen in Chhapaak, directed by Meghna Gulzar of Raazi and Talvar fame. The film release on 10th January 2020.
