From Sharan Sharma's Gunjan Saxena to Hardik Mehta's Roohi Afza — 10 Directors who'll be making their Bollywood debut in 2020

With the perennially evolving landscape of Bollywood, especially in the past five years or so, new and exciting filmmakers are constantly entering the fray to prove their mettle and leave their mark. Last year, we had the likes of Aditya Dhar (Uri: The Surgical Strike), Raaj Shaandilyaa (Dream Girl), Laxman Utekar (Luka Chuppi) and Jagah Shakti (Mission Mangal) make a huge splash with their debut films to the extent that Aditya Dhar even bagged Best Director at the 66th National Film Awards. This year, too, we'll see a host of names vying to make their presence felt in Bollywood with their very first feature. Check them out below:

1.) Tannishtha Chatterjee - Roam Rome Mein

True to form and the work she's mostly done as an actress until now, Tannishtha will be making her directorial debut with a feminist film, revolving around a brother in search of his sister. Tannishtha also stars in the film alongside none other than actor par excellence, Nawazuddin Siddiqui.

2.) Sharan Sharma - Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl

Backed by Karan Johar and starring Janhvi Kapoor, Pankaj Tripathi and Angad Bedi, Sharan Sharma will be debuting with a dream biopic that tells the story of the first female Indian Air Force pilots (along with Srividya Rajan) to fly into a war zone.

3.) Hardik Mehta - Roohi Afza

The Stree horror-comedy universe will be expanded with this Rajkummar Rao-Janhvi Kapoor starrer, centred on a male spectre who abducts brides on their honeymoon, and the reins for this first-of-its-kind Bollywood franchise have been entrusted to newcomer Hardik Mehta.

4.) Collin D'Cunha - Dostana 2

There's something about Janhvi and debutant filmmakers in 2020 because the lass will again be directed by one in the sequel to the 2008 hit comedy. Giving her company in her third outing of the year will be Kartik Aaryan and another debut albeit in front of the camera, Laksh Lalwani.

5.) Abhishek Dudhaiya - Bhuj The Pride of India

Abhishek Dudhaiya has been bestowed the honour of helming a film on IAF Squadron Leader Vijay Karnik, whose oversaw the reconstruction of Bhuj airport with the help of 300 local women, which let to a crucial victory during the 1971 Indo-Pak war. The film stars Ajay Devgn, Sanjay Dutt, Sonakshi Sinha, Nora Fatehi, Sharad Kelkar, Ammy Virk and Pranitha Subhash.

6.) Abir Sengupta - Indoo Ki Jawani

Abir's maiden directorial outing will constitute directing Kiara Advani in her first female-centrc film, which focuses on a spirited young girl who inadvertently keep finding herself in hilarious situations due to her extensive experimentation with dating apps.

7.) Hitesh Kewalya - Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan

Shubh Mangal Saavdhan was the second of Ayushmann Khurrana's seven consecutive hits, which only adds to the expectations from first-timer Hitesh, who's been entrusted with the onus of cracking the sequel and deriving humour from a truly complex and stigmatized subject like homosexuality in Indian society.

8.) Om Raut - Tanahji: The Unsung Warrior

Om's film has already begun with a bang and set the benchmark really high for all other debutant directors to live up to this year.

9.) Seema Pahwa - Ramprasad Ki Tehrvi

Considering the standing ovations this family satire about six dysfunctional siblings, who must put aside their differences to perform their father's last rites and clear his debt, had received at each of its screening at MAMI last year, the expectations from veteran actress Seema Pahwa's first foray behind the camera are already astronomical.

10.) Bhanu Pratap Singh - Bhoot Part One: The Haunted Ship

Inspirered by the true incident, this horror film, starring Vicky Kaushal and Bhumi Pednekar, revolves around a young couple trapped on an abandoned ship laying motionless on a beach. Given the premise and actors involved, Bhanu couldn't have bargained for a better launch pad in Bollywood.
