Jawaani Jaaneman movie review: Saif Ali Khan, Tabu and Alaya F's family comedy is saved by a cracking second half

Saif Ali Khan hasn't been enjoying the best of times as a leading man, with his films (excluding Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior, which anyway stars Ajay Devgn) since the past few years not only biting the bullet at the box-office, but also not enjoying a good response from those who've watched them. On the other hand, the launch of a star kid is met with lot of cynicism these days, making Alaya F's debut all that more difficult. Thankfully, the two have the ever-reliable Tabu for company, who's entry in the second half of Jawaani Jaaneman not only uplifts proceedings, but also works as a signal for the entire film along with her co-actors to perform a 180 degree U-turn.

Read on for our full Jawaani Jaaneman review...

What's it about

Jawaani Jaaneman tells the story of Jazz (Saif Ali Khan)'s carefree, philandering, bachelor lifestyle even after the age of 40, which is sent for a toss upon the arrival of his 21-year-od daughter Tia (Alaya F), whom he didn't know existed. How this threatens his independent lifestyle and does it finally make him turn a new chapter in life forms the rest of the plot.

What's hot

In a nutshell, the second half completely saves the film, which simply meanders till the interval point. Not only does Hussain Dalal's script become tighter, Abbas Dalal's dialogues, tighter and Sachinder Vats and Chandan Arora's editing, crisper, but Saif and Alaya also seem to breathe new life into their performances while Director Nitin Kakkar's more than gets his act together as the captain of the shop, resulting in both a funnier and more emotional upswing for the film.

Thankfully, all this occurs in the latter half for the audience to walk away in a better mood. That it coincides with the entry of Tabu only reaffirms how an ace artiste can singlehandedly be responsible for turning a film's fortunes around even when present in just a handful of scenes. Kumud Mishra and Kubbra Sait are also good in their supporting parts as is Chunky Panday in a cameo, and it's a pleasure to see Farida Jalal after so long. Among the other positives are Manoj Kumar Khatoi's camerawork and the Ole Ole remix.

What's not

If y'all haven't guessed it already, then it's the drab first half, where almost none of the attempted funny moments or jokes hit the mark, nor does the intended emotional bonding between father and daughter work. Alaya F, too, despite possessing a pretty good screen presence, aided by an infectiously beaming smile, needs to work on infusing more energy into her act.

BL Verdict

Jawaani Jaaneman gets most things in its second half, doing just about enough for you to walk away feeling good about the film. The climax, in particular, spins a refreshing twist on an age-old trope in romantic Bollywood films, leaving you in smiles at the outcome. I'm going with 3 out of 5 stars.
