Oscars 2020: Joker's 11 nominations draw wild reactions from star Joaquin Phoenix and Director Todd Philips
The nominations for the 2020 Academy Awards was announced this past Monday, 13th January 2019, and Joker emerged as the frontrunner with a staggering 11 nominations, beating the likes of other hot contenders like Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, The Irishman and 1917. Other award-season darlings like Parasite, Little Women and Marriage Story bagged 6 nominations each while Jojo Rabbit made a surprising splash with the same number of nods. Anyway back to the leading headliner among the competition Joker. The Joaquin Phoenix starrer, which subverted the superhero genre with a darkly twisted, cerebral approach, made its presence felt in almost all the major as well technical categories.

No doubt ecstatic at the love showered on their film by the Academy panel, both Director Todd Phillips and his leading man, Joaquin Phoenix, shared their first reactions.
Expressing how overwhelmed, humbled and thankful he is, Phillips said, "Joker began as an idea, an experiment really could we take an "indie approach" to a studio film by inverting it into a character study to reflect the world around us? Explore what we're seeing and feeling in society, from the lack of empathy to the effects of the absence of love. I am deeply honored by the overwhelming recognition of the Academy this morning, and I want to thank the genius that is Joaquin Phoenix, and all my incredible collaborators. We are beyond humbled that our peers in the filmmaking community have embraced the film and its message.
On the other hand, Phoenix declared how he felt simultaneously honoured and humbled while also not forgetting to congratulate the other nominees: "I feel honored and humbled to have been nominated by my fellow actors. The Academy's encouragement helped ignite and sustain my career and I am incredibly grateful for that support. I'd like to also congratulate my fellow nominees for being recognized for their inspiring performances that have enriched our art form."
