Republic Day 2020: From Dunkirk and Uri to Lincoln and Manikarnika, we look at how Hollywood and Bollywood treat patriotism
Here's wishing all of you a great Republic Day. We know, we're as sad as you about missing out on a public holiday to a weekend, but we have decided to look at the bright side of things. We're spending the Republic Day watching movies. We have enough movies running at the theatres and with online streaming platforms available at the tip of our finger, we're spoilt for choice. Given it is a patriotic weekend, we decided to colour ourselves with tricolour with the help of movies. But while we are soaking up on the nationalism spirit, we began pondering upon how Hollywood tackles a patriotic movie.
So, we decided to pull out the most recent patriotic films in Bollywood and chose Hollywood movies whose themes are similar to the Hindi ones. Let's start of with Uri: The Surgical Strike and we're comparing it with Dunkirk. We know they are two starkly different movies but both deal with army stories.
Dunkirk and Uri: The Surgical Strike
The two movies tell the tale of two iconic wars. While one is directed by Christopher Nolan, the other is director by Aditya Dhar. Dunkirk treated a war movie in complete silence. There were no words that helped in the story telling. The movie was all about the visual pleasure. Whereas, Uri was all about the josh. Like Border and LOC: Kargil, Uri ignited the spirit with patriotism through slogans and drama. This got us thinking, Hollywood could bring about the spirit even with zero words involved whereas we Indians love it loud and dramatic.
Vice vs The Accidental Prime Minister
These two movies delve into the stories of two political leaders who brought about a change in the country good or bad we leave it to you to decide during their tenure. While there are several differences, Christian Bale's Vice and Anupam Kher's The Accidental Prime Minister held one common key: both the movies made every historical situation real. From the characters to historical events, everything felt so real.
Lincoln vs Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi
These two movies have one thing in common: both are based on two historic leaders who paved way to a revolution. However, both the movies are treated differently. While the tone of Lincoln is a lot more mellow, Kangana Ranaut's Manikarnika is loud and vibrant. It goes on to show that both the countries' histories are differently coloured, hence our patriotic movies are louder, vibrant and dramatic.
