Malang BEATS Chhapaak, Panga and Jawaani Jaaneman to become 3rd biggest opener of 2020

Aditya Roy Kapur, Disha Patani, Anil Kapoor and Kunal Kemmu starrer Malang has enjoyed a decent opening day at the box office as it raked in Rs 6.71 crore. While the mass centres were below average, the multiplexes contributed in a healthy way at the ticket windows. With these numbers, Malang has become the third biggest opener of the year after Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior and Street Dancer 3D. It has beaten films like Deepika Padukone's Chhapaak, Kangana Ranaut's Panga and Saif Ali Khan's Jawaani Jaaneman to achieve this feat at the box office.

Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior - Rs 15.10 crore

Street Dancer 3D - Rs 10.26 crore

Malang - Rs 6.71 crore

Chhapaak - Rs 4.77 crore

Jawaani Jaaneman - Rs 3.24 crore

Panga - Rs 2.70 crore

In the film, Aditya Roy Kapur dons two looks and in one of them, he was in a bulky avatar. Talking about the transformation, he said, "(Director) Mohit Suri and I were clear that there will be two different looks, and the character had to go through both mental and physical transformation. Changing physicality actually started changing my state of mind as well, and helped me find the character. All the people I consulted told me that when you're building muscles, you need eight to 12 weeks completely off everything else when you are training. We started the shoot with the younger portion (of the character), which required me to be lean. I psyched myself to hit the gym even though we were shooting for 12 to 14 hours."

He further said, "In 'Malang', the challenge was that I had to play a character across two different time periods. One where I had to be really lean, and for the other I had to look really bulky. Having done the lean portion before, I was pretty confident but getting big is an entirely different ball game.
