Coronavirus pandemic: Postponement of Master, Soorarai Pottru and other south biggies have incurred losses to the tune of over Rs. 600 crore for the film industry

You can't deny the fact that the south industry is almost at par with Bollywood in terms of scale and grandeur and the massive fan following of south stars like Rajinikanth, Chiranjeevi, Vijay, Prabhas and Ajith. And, just like Bollywood and Hollywood, many south biggies have also been indefinitely pushed due to the coronavirus pandemic, which has led to huge disappointment among movie-buffs. Due to this situation, South producers have suffered whopping losses in excess of Rs. 600 crore. So, let's check their breakup in detail:

Kollywood

A Tamil biggie was supposed to release on April 9 and enjoy the extended weekend of the Vishu festival. We are talking about Thalapathy Vijay and Vijay Sethupathi's Master. The expectations were sky-high from the action-thriller as Thalapathy enjoys a massive fan-base not only in the domestic market, but also in the international circuits. He has also been enjoying a phenomenal run at the box office with the consecutive success of Mersal, Sarkar and Bigil, with the latter crossing the Rs. 300 crore mark at the global market. Another biggie, which has faced delay due to this global crisis is Suriya starrer Soorari Pottru, which was scheduled to release on May 1. Pushing ahead the release of these two ventures has caused a loss of Rs. 400 crore alone, and we are hoping once the situation returns to normalcy, these two ventures will be the first releases at ticket windows.

Mollywood

Director Priyadarshan's Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham, featuring Mohanlal in the lead role, has been made on a whopping budget of Rs. 100 crore. The film was scheduled to release on March 26, but was postponed due to the shutdown of theatres because of COVID-19. Mammootty starrer One also faced a similar problem, as it was supposed to release by the end of March or the first week of April.

Tollywood

Films like Anushka Shetty's Nishabdam, Rana Daggubati's Aranya and Nani's V were supposed to release in the first week of April, but they, too, became victims of the coronavirus lockdown and have been indefinitely pushed.
