Throwback Thursday: Here's how Zanjeer's success made Jaya Bachchan and Amitabh Bachchan hurriedly tie the knot

One of the most-talked about marriages in Bollywood is that of Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan. The two have spent 46 years together and counting. But do you know that Amitabh Bachchan had a liking for Jaya Bachchan even before they did their first film, Guddi (1971) together. It seems he saw her on a magazine cover and fell for her beautiful eyes. On reading the interview, he understood that Jaya Bachchan was the perfect blend of modernity with traditional values. She had met him once before in FTII in Pune but it was just a meeting and none remembered the other. Jaya Bachchan was already a top actress then.

Love blossomed on the sets of BR Ishara's Ek Nazar where the two were paired with each other. It seems Jaya fell first for Amitabh Bachchan and it grew intense over a period of time. However, no one in the industry took the relationship very seriously till Zanjeer happened. It seems Jaya, Amitabh and their friends decided to go on a foreign holiday if the film became a hit. Zanjeer, 1973 was a blockbuster and they were all set to fly to London. However, late poet Harivanshrai Bachchan told his son to get married first and then travel abroad with her. The two knew they would marry.

He wrote on his blog post in 2019, "Marriage had been decided among us .. nothing to be exaggerated or celebrated with any aplomb .. just the two families and .. done .. off to London, my first trip ever and hers too .. Zanjeer a success and a promise that if it did well we would all - a gang of our friends - would go on a holiday to London ! (sic)."

It seems everything happened in a rush. He further wrote, "Pandit and family informed .. next day all set .. flight at night .. marriage to finish before the flight (sic). I dress up in formal marriage Indian .. get into my car and want to drive to Malabar Hill where her friends lived and where the ceremony was to be done .. my driver Nagesh, pushes me out and insist he would drive me to the wedding .. the substitute for the tradition horse .. Waiting all set at Mangal, the name of the house on rent on the 7th road JVPD Scheme .. and it begins to drizzle .. neighbours rush out to me .. leave for the wedding now .. the rain is a good omen .. off I went .. wedding over in a few hours .. done .. Mr and Mrs proclaimed .. over !!"

Zanjeer was written by Salim-Javed and heralded the golden period of Amitabh Bachchan's career. The writers felt he was perfect for the role despite naysayers. Jaya Bachchan agreed to do the role just for Amitabh. The writers also introduced Amitabh Bachchan to late Prakash Mehra.
