Throwback Thursday: When birthday boy Dev Patel bagged over 10 nominations for his debut film, Slumdog Millionaire

It's Jamal's birthday today. Now you may be wondering who is Jamal. Well, not Jamal but the actor who played Jamal in Slumdog Millionaire. The movie that released 12 years ago has been a turning point in the lives of many in the Indian film industry. And if you still don't remember who Jamal was, let us tell you, it was Dev Patel who played the skinny boy from Dharavi, who went on to become a millionaire after participating in the Indian version of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? The film made Dev Patel an overnight star, and a lanky but nonetheless handsome man that many girls went on to dream about.

Dev Patel several hearts as the reports of him dating his co-star Freida Pinto who played his love interest, Latika in the film surfaced in 2009. They dated for 6 years before calling it off in 2014. On Dev's special day today, we would like to give a tribute to the actor with his first film that made him the star of Hollywood. The actor was lauded for his performance of Jamal Malik in Slumdog Millionaire. He received as many as 13 nominations for his portrayal of Jamal Malik in the crime drama film. Talking about the nominations, Dev was nominated for BAFTA's Best Actor in Leading Role, Screen Actors Guild Awards in Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture (that he won) and Outstanding Performance by a Male in a Supporting Role.

He was also nominated in Black Reel Awards for Best Actor and Best Breakthrough Performance, both of which he went on to take home. Dev also picked Most Promising Newcomer of British Independent Film Awards, Most Promising Performer of Chicago Film Critics Association Awards, Critics' Choice Awards for Best Young Actor in a Movie, National Board of Review Awards for Best Breakthrough Performance. He was also nominated for MTV Movie Awards in Best Kiss (with Freida Pinto) and Best Male Breakthrough Performance respectively. Furthermore, he was also nominated in NAACP Image Awards in Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture category, Saturn Awards in Best youth Performance in a Film category.

Slumdog Millionaire was one of the huge hits back in 2008. It bagged 8 Academy Awards namely - Best Picture (Christian Colson), Best Director (Danny Boyle), Best Adapted Screenplay (Simon Beaufoy), Best Cinematography (Anthony Dod Mantle), Best Original Score (AR Rahman), Best Original Song (Jai ho, AR Rahman (composer), Gulzar (lyricist)), Best Editing (Chris Dickens) Best Sound Mixing (Resul Pookutty, Richard Pryke, Ian Tapp).

We don't know if anyone has been nominated for so many awards in their debut film. Well, wish you a very happy birthday, Dev.
