Arjan Bajwa opens up on the backlash against Kabir Singh: 'If there was something wrong with the film, it would not have made more than 250 crore' [Exclusive]

It's not always that we get a celeb to open up so much during an interview, but such was the conversation we recently had with the dashing and talented Arjan Bajwa, that there's only one word that comes to mind to describe it candid. From receiving appreciation right from the start of his career for films like Guru and Fashion and walking down memory lane with the bevy of stars he's shared screen space with to opening up on the possibility of State of Siege 2, Fashion 2 (yup, the Priyanka Chopra starrer) and finally, facing the big question head on: The backlash against his biggest hit, Kabir Singh this is one interview you wouldn't want to miss.

Watch his full interview below:

Talking about his biggest hit, Kabir Singh, the film had already come under severe criticism form a section of the media and audience, and most of the critics, especially after his Director, Sandeep Reddy Vanga, made some controversial statements to a senior journalist, where he had said on record that it's natural to slap each other when two people are in love.

Opening up on this, Arjan Bajwa said, "It's a long debate. The simple line would be that what some people though or accused the film of being, it was probably in their mind. They should have seen it just as a film, a story, and not delved too much into it. There are times when you see so much wrong in films, which are probably not the right way of showing things, and people just see the film and forget about it. It was not something you had to make such a hue and cry about or needed to quote the Director on or get Shahid (Kapoor) into a controversy. It was just a film, watch it as a film. There's no need to delve so much into it."

Elaborating on how the criticism was marginal, Arjan added. "At the same time I would say, ultimately the audience decides. Some people had a different opinion, but eventually the audience decides, and that's what I keep saying, that the audience loved it. The songs are so popular, it was one of the best albums of 2019. The film has had such a brilliant repeat value. It did a business of more than 250 crore (278 crore nett to be precise), so what do you have to say about that? If there was something wrong with the film, something wrong with the story or something wrong with what is there in the film, it would not have made more than 250 crore, people wouldn't have really liked the film."

Coming to what Sandeep Vanga had said, Arjan explained, "I think, it was too much of reading between the lines. It was not something that had to be takes so far away. There are so many things to take care of in our country, rather than taking one line and making a mountain out of a molehill. He said it in a very different context, it was perceived in a very different context, it was portrayed in a very, very different context all together, it became more like a Chinese whisper that this guy is a misogynist and Sandeep Reddy believes in this. He didn't say it like that (chuckles). I think, people should take it lightly, just take it as a film and not take it seriously. There are too many things in life that are already taken seriously.

Signing off on how social media is having an adverse effect on films as opposed to before, Arjan concluded, "This happens because of those people on social media who have nothing to do and put out dirty, negative comments. It says more about their mindset. It doesn't say about what they are watching or the actor they are talking about or the film they are talking about. If they are writing a lot of dirty things, if they are trolling you or abusing you, it says more about their state of mind. People who appreciate social media, people who use it as a medium to connect with people and say nice things or have a conversation, that is good. People with the right state of mind, will try and have a nice conversations, will try and at least ask you questions and you will respond in a good way. But, if you talk badly about a film and try and point out many negative things about it, then somewhere, those bad thoughts were already there in your head, you managed to notice them alone. You won't notice anything good in the film, neither the storyline nor the music. And when such people exit the theatre, they become the Director."
