Filmy Friday: Before Namashi Chakraborty’s Bad Boy, here are five Rajkumar Santoshi films every millennial needs to watch

After almost seven years, Rajkumar Santoshi is back with Bad Boy. The film has been written and directed by him. It marks the debut of Mithun Chakraborty's son, Namashi Chakraborty and Amrin Qureshi. Everyone who has watched Bollywood films of the '90s is acquainted with his tremendous repertoire of movies. Here is a look at his five unforgettable films that proved that he is a master story-teller

Ghayal

Rajkumar Santoshi's films with Sunny Deol rank amongst his best, but many feel that Ghayal (1990) was the best. It in the film, we see Sunny as Ajay Mehra, an amateur boxer who decides to avenge the death of his brother played by Raj Babbar. The film made headlines for its strong performances and excessive violence. Fans still remember Sunny Deol roaring, 'Balwant Rai Ke Kutton' in the theatres. It was the second biggest hit of 1990. The film won Rajkumar Santoshi and Sunny Deol the Best Director and Best Actor awards. It also won the National Award.

Damini

At a time when films told from a woman's perspective were only found in art cinema, Damini broke the barriers to emerge as a cult feminist movie. The film's dialogues like Tarikh Pe Tarikh and Dhaai Kilo Ka Haath are iconic in Bollywood history. Damini (1993) won four Filmfare Awards including ones for Best Director and Best Supporting Actor. Sunny Deol took home the National Award too for his intense and unforgettable performance as an alcoholic lawyer who aids Damini (Meenakshi Seshadri) in her quest for justice.

Andaz Apna Apna

After a couple of intense films, Rajkumar Santoshi ventured into the comic zone with Andaz Apna Apna (1994). The movie did average business at the box-office but is now hailed as one of the best comedies of Bollywood. Lines like 'Crime Master Gogo, Mogambo ka Bhatija' have their own fan base. We have seen Santoshi's comic flair in Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani (2009) too.

Ghatak

Vendetta has been the prominent theme of all action films of the '80s and '90s. And no one explored the genre better than Rajkumar Santoshi. Raw characters, gripping fights and great dialogues marked all his films. Ghatak (1996) was the third successful collaboration of Sunny Deol, Amrish Puri and Meenakshi Seshadri. Fans also remember Danny Denzongpa as Katya from the actioner.

Pukar

Anil Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit and Namrata Shirodkar played the main roles in this thriller set against the backdrop of the armed forces. Danny Denzongpa returned as Abhrush, a dreaded terrorist. It did average business at the box-office but critics appreciated it immensely. Madhuri Dixit delivered a memorable performance as the woman who goes wrong in jealousy. Pukar (2000) was shot in Alaska.

Khakee

Rajkumar Santoshi brought together top stars like Amitabh Bachchan, Ajay Devgn, Akshay Kumar, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in this action-thriller around the police force. Khakee (2004) made critics rave about Santoshi's powerful writing and knack of getting great performances from actors.

The maker's excellent command over his subject makes us wonder what magic he has created with Namashi Chakraborty and Amrin Qureshi in Bad Boy. We have to wait and watch!
