From Thugs of Hindostan to Zero: When 5 highly-anticipated big-budget films turned out DUDS at the box office

This lockdown doesn't seem to be getting over anytime soon, and even when it does, it is still extremely unclear when the film business will resume operations and we get to hear cash registers ringing again. It's throwback mode continuing and today we have another special box office feature. Well, big stars and huge scale alone aren't factors enough to bring great footfalls into the cinema halls. And today, we feature 5 films, which starred big names and were made on a massive budget; but unfortunately, they turned out to be disasters at the box office. These films disappointed the audience and made producers cry because of their poor business. They are the classic examples that if your film lacks soul or fails to strike the chord with the audience, even A-list stars will not be able to save it. So, let's check them out...

Thugs of Hindostan

Well, for the first time, we saw two megastars Aamir Khan and Amitabh Bachchan coming together on the silver screen for Thugs of Hindostan. Expected to be a Diwali treat, it took a record-breaking start by collecting over Rs 50 crore on its first day at the box office. But soon negative reviews hampered its business and after a long time Aamir Khan delivered his first flop at the ticket windows.

Zero

Shah Rukh Khan, Anushka Sharma and Katrina Kaif starrer Zero was in the headlines right from its inception. While people were more than excited to witness SRK's vertically challenged character, the plot turned out to be unimpressive and even great VFX and good couldn't save the film from becoming a debacle.

Kalank

The period drama had an ensemble star cast comprising of Varun Dhawan, Aditya Roy Kapur, Alia Bhatt, Sanjay Dutt, Sonakshi Sinha and Madhuri Dixit. The trailer and songs worked very well among the audience and it even helped the film in getting a good opening. But the negative word of mouth soon started affecting this Rs 150 crore budget film, which ended its theatrical run around Rs 80 crore. Interestingly, it was Varun's first flop film of his career.

Bombay Velvet

The most ambitious project of Anurag Kashyap, Bombay Velvet featuring Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma and Karan Johar was made on a lavish budget of Rs 125 crore. But the novelty and authenticity in the plot failed to garner footfalls and it faced a loss of Rs 100 crore at the domestic market!

Kites

Kites brought ace director Anurag Basu and superstar actor Hrithik Roshan together along with Mexican hottie Barbara Mori. Expected to be a dream crossover project, the cliche romantic plot put Rs 125 crore in the drain.
