Best Hindi short films 2020: Natkhat, Devi, Mishti Doi — 7 pint-sized movies you need to watch ASAP

While cinemas all across the country are shut and movie-buffs wait to see their favourite stars on long-anticipated films on the big screen, web series and reruns of classic TV shows have become the hot-new source of entertainment. But, as well as some of them have been received, they just don't evoke the same satisfaction of watching a film, do they? After all, there's a reason why some cinematic Directors are tagged as 'auteurs' or 'masters'. In such times, short films can prove to be a real boon, especially with some gems like Natkhat, Devi and Misti Doi having released this year.

Now, we know that some films are releasing directly on OTT platforms to fill the void, but the reactions to them have not been as favourable as expected, indicating that the makers have chosen a convenient quirk of fate to escape potential theatrical disappointment rather than a product of the times we live in. In such a scenario, we present you seven of the best Hindi short films of 2020:

1.) Mishti Doi

As sweet as its title and as comforting the dish feels on your palate, Mishti Doi revolves around the arrangements a widower makes to welcome his son and daughter-in-law a visit that will test their bond and leave us all with a beautiful message. While Deepal Doshi and Milind Uke shine in their roles, it's Bhawna Munjal who steals the show, proving that she made the right choice to switch from journalism to acting.

2.) Natkhat

Giving 4.5 stars to Natkhat, our critic wrote, "The entire team deserves a pat on the back for holding a mirror against the patriarchy of Indian society yet leaving us with the hope that it can all change if only we 'nip it in the bud' in our very homes." Of course, the most effusive praise was reserved for it's star, Vidya Balan. These factors alone should indicate how imperative a watch this short movie is. It'll be releasing in a few weeks online. Keep an eye out.

3.) Devi

Starring an ensemble cast, including the legendary Kajol along with Neha Dhupia, Shruti Haasan, Neena Kulkarni, Yashaswi Dayama, and Shivani Raghuvanshi, Devi is a powerful discourse between 13 women on rape and a timely introspection for all of us that the only reason behind rape is 'A Rapist'.

4.) Nawab

Nawab not only displays how a dog can change just about any person and inseparable bond that's forged between human and canine, but also showcases a touching side of Aparshakti Khurana we seldom get to see on the silver screen.

5.) The Lover

This gut-wrenching short, featuring impeccable performances from Shweta Basu Prasad, Zarina Wahab and Anuraag Malhan, deftly balances a tale of love and revenge, making us ponder how a law meant to protect someone could be abused for vested reasons.

6.) Ghar Ki Murgi

A love letter of sorts to homemakers, Ghar Ki Murgi, starring the immaculate Sakshi Tanwar, and directed by Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari of Bareilly Ki Barfi fame, highlights how the efforts of those who choose to stay at home and create something special out of it are rarely acknowledged, leave alone appreciated.

7.) Sarvagun Sampann

Another lovely film on women empowerment, Sarvagun Sampann may not star big names like the others on this list, but it gives a big message all the same, of how society's judgmental attitude against unmarried women moving up in age can be easily used against its bigoted blinders to pull the wool over people's eyes. The twist at the end is truly something.

So, what are you waiting for. Start watching them right away.
