Happy birthday, Ekta Kapoor! 5 times when the TV czarina proved she is a risk-taker
Ekta Kapoor turns a year older today. The czarina of TV has produced countless TV shows and reality shows as well. From producing India's longest-running daily soap to telling a gay love story on the web, Ekta is a total risk-taker. The lady respects her TV audience immensely and produces shows that one can watch comfortably with the family. However, her online platform ALT Balaji is giving us stories that make us think and introspect. In her stellar cast, she has taken some huge risks. On her birthday, we list down five endeavours that showcase her maverick side...
Naagin
One of Ekta's biggest success stories in recent times, the concept of fiction content on the weekend was unheard of before Naagin happened. The first trailer of the snake-woman gliding through grabbed our attention with its intrigue and suspense. The promotions of the show were done on a large scale and she got a fabulous cast in place with Arjun Bijlani, Mouni Roy and Adaa Khan. The first show aced the TRP charts but many were still uncertain about its long-term success. Naagin was a TRP-topper throughout and spawned off similar shows in India as well as abroad. With TRP points being over 4 in season one, there was not an iota of doubt about season two. Ekta took inspiration from dad Jeetendra's hit 1976 film, Naagin and adapted it for TV. While it has been trolled mercilessly, the lady is least bothered about the backlash.
Pyaar Ki Yeh Ek Kahaani
After seeing the roaring craze of Twilight amongst youngsters, Ekta decided that India also needed its own version of the vampire love story. Not many were convinced about the idea but Ekta went ahead casting a then not-so-famous Vivian Dsena as the vampire lover. She also roped in Siddhant Karnick, Vahbiz Dorabjee, Suyyash Rai, Kishwer Merchantt and the rest is history. It was one of the most successful shows for Star One and established Vivian as a TV star.
ALT Balaji
With web-series being the flavour of 2017, Ekta announced her newest venture ALT Balaji, a project really close to her heart. With her digital viewing platform, she hopes to tell stories she always wanted to tell to her viewers. The first season gave us an intense extra-marital drama, a female Devdas and the most heart-warming of the lot, a gay love story, Romil and Jugal. Then, we had Nimrat Kaur's The Test Case, which was totally brilliant.
Love Sex Aur Dhoka
No one ever expected Ekta to produce a film like LSD. Critics hailed it as ground-breaking cinema that left us riveted. ALT Entertainment's Love Aur Dhoka told three stories taking on the idea of sensationalizing important issues in media in a sleazy way. Ekta was hailed for taking such a risk as a producer which paved the way for experimental cinema.
Yeh Hai Mohabbatein
Okay, you might hate us for this but Yeh Hai Mohabbatein was one of the first shows to be adapted from a novel, Manju Kapur's Custody. It also spoke about the sensitive issue of surrogacy. With divorces, remarriages, custody issues being spoken about, YHM at the start was refreshingly contemporary. Divyanka Tripathi's stardom on TV reached a new level with this show.
