World Music Day 2020: 7 times Hollywood movies borrowed songs from Bollywood

Today is Fete de la Musique or World Music Day, as popularly called. The celebration of the day originates from France, and dates as back as 1982. It all began with a music festival that was held in France in that year. And it caught on, and eventually the entire world joined in and now it's a legit celebratory day. We sure as world can use as many reasons to bring us together as we can. And music is only the best reason. Crossover of songs and musicians is something that we all love. When Akon sang Chammak Challo for Ra.One, or when Kylie Minogue sang Chiggy Wiggy for Blue, we loved it. And we loved it even more, when Hollywood borrowed ditties from our desi world. Here are a few examples:

Deadpool - Mera Joota Hai Japaani (Shree 420)

Remember Raj Kapoor song Mera Joota Hai Japaani playing in Deadpool? The story behind using this is that director Tim Miller heard the song years ago in a pub in London and fell in love with it. He found an opportunity to use the song in his film when Deadpool hires a cab driven by an Indian.

Ghost World - Jaan Pehchaan Ho (Gumnaam)

The song from Gumnaam, became extremely popular for its psychedelic choreography. It's popularity spanned across the globe. And the proof is that during the opening credits sequence of the Scarlett Johansson film Ghost World.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - Waada Na Tod (Dil Tujhko Diya).

When Kate Winslet takes Jim Carrey to her home for the first time, we can hear the Rati Agnihotri song playing in the background.

Moulin Rouge - Chamma Chamma (China Gate)

A Hollywoodised version of the hit Urmila Matondkar number plays during an extremely important sequence during the film. Contrary to the upbeat vibe of the film, a stalking takes places in intercuts.

The Accidental Husband - Chalka (Saathiya)

This might be the best example of usage of Bollywood song in Hollywood movie. The Accidental Husband stars Uma Thurman, and in scene she does the walk of shame to her place after a one night stand. Chalka Chalka starts playing in the background giving the song the perfect feel.

Inside Man - Chaiyya Chaiyya (Dil Se...)

The opening credits of the movie roll out on the hit Shah Rukh Khan number. And to be honest, it makes no sense. Maybe the director just really liked the song.

Remember Me - Sanson Ki Mala

The Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan song plays in the background faintly when Robert Pattinson takes out Emille De Ravin out for dinner in an Indian restaurant.
