Naseeruddin Shah on OTT releases: It will be interesting to see the reaction of the audience to a Salman Khan film
If you thought nothing could change the world, bet you wouldn't have ever thought of 2020. We would like to assume that even the astrologers couldn't have predicted such a huge change ever. 2020 has changed humans, but for the good or bad, remains to be seen. However, it has certainly changed the Indian Cinematic experience. How? Well, you don't see people going to theatres out in pandemic, do you? Six to seven months ago when the pandemic had hit India, nobody thought it would come to this. Yes, shootings of films and TV shows were stalled, celebs were stuck at home without or little work. But everyone thought one day, everything would be fine. There would be people out and about running around like before. (There are people who are defying the pandemic and still going out and about). However, we do not see that in the near future.
You may not see people queuing to watch films as films or the makers are taking their films to the OTT platforms. Yes, you may have noticed this change as it is a fairly recent development. The theatre chains are very unhappy with the distributors and makers who are switching to OTT. Naseeruddin Shah recently reacted to the same but he wondered what the audience would react to the masala entertainer films releasing on TV or OTT platforms. "It will be interesting to see what will be the reaction of the audience to a Salman Khan film, the audience that whistles and claps and throws coins at the screen and dances in the aisles... What'll be their reaction when they watch a movie like that at home, alone, or with their children? Will they behave in the same way? I doubt it," he said in a round table conference with Rajeev Masand.
He further added, "This lockdown has inspired so many young filmmakers to attempt interesting, novel subjects without worrying about a producer sitting on their heads asking 'hero kaun hai' or 'gaana daal do' or do all this crap. I'm optimistic about the future, and really glad that the monstrous Rs 500 crore budget might be a thing of the past."
Meanwhile, on the work front, Naseeruddin Shah was seen in Bandish Bandits with Shreya Chaudhary and Ritwik Bhowmik.
