WTF Wednesday: Here’s why news channels need to stop detailed investigation of possible witnesses in Sushant Singh Rajput’s death case

The demise of Sushant Singh Rajput has been one of the biggest tragedies in Bollywood. At 34, the young actor who was a powerhouse performer left us with a short yet remarkable repertoire of films. This was not all. He was an intellectual, philanthropist and visionary. Sushant Singh Rajput, in short, he was limited edition. Many are in disbelief that the actor could have suffered from depression. They are pinpointing how he was perfectly fine till mid-2019. But there are statements from his therapists that he was allegedly battling bipolar disorder. While mental health awareness and sensitization is a very important issue, what is gaining focus is the criminal angle of the case.

Now, everyday we are hearing interviews of the actor's former staff, friends and associates saying how life allegedly changed for Sushant Singh Rajput after the entry of Rhea Chakraborty. While it is good to see that TV channels are trying to explore various aspects of the case, what is worrisome is in the detailed nature of the interviews being telecast. Here are a few reasons for the same

Of late, there are rumours about the involvement of high-profile people in the case. We always hear about witnesses turning hostile and so on. By airing such prolonged interviews of witnesses, you're strengthening the case of the opposition.

There is no rule that says that interviews given to channels are admissible as proof in the courts of law. So, there is no need for this mad rush for bytes.

One of the biggest issues is the safety of the people. While they feel it is okay to give bytes, one cannot rule out this angle.

Today, it is the era of social media trials. In all fairness, it should not happen. Excessive coverage by the media might influence people, which can adversely impact the processes and verdict.

Also, the families of those involved are going through a tough time. This might lead to unwanted harassment.

There is no doubt that everyone wants justice for Sushant Singh Rajput, if he has been wronged. But people need to be prudent enough to know that abetment of suicide is a serious allegation and needs prudent jurisdiction and procedures. We hope that media maintains a limit and does not make things unnecessarily tough for people.
