Filmy Friday: With only 1 blockbuster, 1 super-hit and 6 flops, it was a 'thanda' festive month of Diwali
October is always considered one of the crucial months for Bollywood, as filmmakers release their big-ticket ventures on the national holidays of Gandhi Jayanti, Dussehra, and Diwali. This year, too, we saw several films trying to capitalize on festive weekends, with some emerging winners and other, crashing, at the box office. In October, Bollywood delivered a blockbuster, a superhit, and 6 flops at the box office. So, let's check them out...
Blockbuster
Hrithik Roshan, Tiger Shroff, and Vaani Kapoor starrer, War, which released on the national holiday of Gandhi Jayanti (October 2), took an earth-shattering start and became the biggest opener of Bollywood by earning Rs. 53.35 nett crore on its first day. The action-thriller went on to earn over Rs 310 crore net and since it is still running in some theatres, we are expecting it to add a few more crore in its kitty. It has already emerged as the highest grosser of the year and is the seventh-highest earner of all-time after Baahubali 2, Dangal, Sanju, PK, Tiger Zinda Hai, and Bajrangi Bhaijaan.
Superhit
Director Farhad Samji's multi-starrer Housefull 4, which boasts an ensemble cast of Akshay Kumar, Bobby Deol, Riteish Deshmukh, Kriti Sanon, Pooja Hegde, and Kriti Kharbanda was released last Friday during the festive weekend of Diwali. Despite getting negative feedback from critics, it impressed the audience and has hitherto earned over Rs. 135 crore nett in its opening week. Since there's no huge competition for the film this week, we are expecting the reincarnation comedy to continue its dominance.
Flops
Unfortunately, we also saw 6 flops from Bollywood this month. While some failed because of poor content, others bit the dust due to strong competition, wrong release timings, and lack of any buzz whatsoever. We're talking about Chiranjeevi's Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy, Rajkummar Roa's Made In China, and Bhumi Pednekar-Taapsee Pannu's Saand Ki Aankh. While Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy clashed with War, Saand Ki Aankh and Made In China battled with Housefull 4. Akshay Kumar's comic caper and Hrithik Roshan's action-thriller remained the priority of the audience, which resulted in the poor performances of its competitors.
On the other hand, Priyanka Chopra's comeback film, The Sky Is Pink had extremely niche appeal for the audience, who showed no interest in the drama as it tanked badly at the box office. Lastly, there was zero awareness about Saif Ali Khan's Laal Kaptaan and Director Vikram Bhatt's Ghost to begin with, and the results showed. Both films emerged disasters.
In the month of November, we have films like Ujda Chaman, Bala, Satellite Shankar, Motichoor Chaknachoor, Marjaavaan, Pagalpanti, and Commando up for release. We hope that all these ventures make their makers happy with their box-office performances.
