2019 Recap: From Kalank to Pagalpanti, here are 5 surprising flops of 2019
Once again, it was a great year of Bollywood as we saw content-driven films will smaller stars getting commercial success along with critical acclaim. While biggies like Salman Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn continued their dominance with respective releases, Vicky Kaushal and Shahid Kapoor surprised box office experts by delivering surprising blockbusters with Uri: The Surgical Strike and Kabir Singh. Amidst all that, we also saw films, which were expected to be money-spinners, but they bombed badly at the ticket windows. These films had good star cast, great budget but no audience due to lack of good content. So, let's check out these movies...
Kalank
The period drama had an ensemble star cast comprised of Varun Dhawan, Aditya Roy Kapur, Alia Bhatt, Sanjay Dutt, Sonakshi Sinha and Madhuri Dixit. The trailer and songs worked very well among the audience and it even helped the film for getting a good opening. But the negative word of mouth soon started affecting this Rs 150 crore film, which ended its theatrical run around Rs 80 crore. Interestingly, it was Varun's first flop film of his career.
Pagalpanti
Another multi-starrer comic caper, which had John Abraham, Ileana D'Cruz, Anil Kapoor, Pulkit Samrat and Kriti Kharbanda in key roles, turned out to be a huge disaster at the box office. Since the film was directed by Anees Bazmee, who is known for delivering comedy hits like Ready, No Entry and Welcome, people expected this film to be a laugh riot but it lacked comic punches.
Panipat
Lagaan, Swades and Jodha Akbar helmer Ashutosh Gowariker arrived this time with magnum opus Panipat, which had Arjun Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt and Kriti Sanon in lead roles. Made on the budget of around Rs 100 crore, the film tanked at the ticket windows as it earned merely around Rs 30 crore. The length of the film was considered to be its major drawback.
The Sky Is Pink
The Sky Is Pink marked the Bollywood comeback of Priyanka Chopra after 3 years. Since PeeCee enjoys a great fan following, we expected this film to earn well. Despite getting critical acclaim, it disappointed at the box office and failed to find any audience. Shockingly, even multiplex audience didn't support the film, for which the film was primarily catered.
The Zoya Factor
Sonam Kapoor and Dulquer Salmaan's The Zoya Factor was expected to be a comic entertainer and the film had the advantage of having a cricket touch. But unimpressive performances and poor direction lead to a huge disappointment.
