2019 Recap: From Rajinikanth and Vijay to Ajith and Venkatesh — THESE south megastars proved that nobody rules the box office like they do

2019 Recap: From Rajinikanth and Vijay to Ajith and Venkatesh — THESE south megastars proved that nobody rules the box office like they do

As we bid adieu to 2019, and look forward to what the next year holds in store, it also signals the time to reflect on what went by in the year that was. On that note, if you're a hardcore film-buff, most of your thoughts will be occupied with moments from the world of cinema. So, just in case, you're in a bit of a pickle trying to streamline your thoughts, your friendly neighbourhood BollywoodLife journalist is here to extend a helping hand. Today, we'll be be taking a look back at the megastars of the South four to be precise who, like every other year, ruled the box-office yet again, proving that old adage that 'form may be temporary, but class is permanent', and their class is simply irreplaceable.

1.) Thalaivar Rajinikanth

Rajini Saar returned to form in roaring fashion with Petta, making us all forget his back-to-back disappointments with Kaala and 2.0 (superhit in Hindi, but barely recovered its cost in other versions despite being the highest Kollywood grosser in history) last year. Petta was not only a certified blockbuster, but also gave the superstar one of his best roles and movies in years, reminding us just how we love to see our Thalaivar, mannerisms, body language, dialogue delivery et al while presenting him with a fresh touch to a younger audience all thanks to the vision of the immensely talented Karthik Subbaraj.

2.) Thala Ajith

Just like Rajini, Ajith, too, needed a shot in the arm after a highly disappointing outing in 2018 with Vivegam. Well, he reminded one and all what a major force he still is in Kollywood, with not one, but two hits in 2019, the first being the massy blockbuster, Viswasam also offering his Vivegam Director, Siva, a chance to shine again and the second the thought-provoking remake of Pink, Nerkonda Paarvai.

3.) Thalapathy Vijay

Vijay can currently do no wrong we'd have to rack our brains to recollect when the superstar last had a setback and when he combined with Atlee, the results are all the more mouthwatering. The ace Director-actor combo reunited for a third time after Theri and Mersal, and Bigil journeyed down the same all-time blockbuster path as the other two.

4.) Victory Venkatesh

Without ever achieving the super-stardom of his Tollywood compatriots like Chiranjeevi, Pawan Kalyan, or his own cousin, Nagarjuna, Daggubati Venkatesh, has ways managed to consistently deliver hit after hit in a his long, storied career, and refuses to slow down to this day. 2019 provided more glaring evidence of how much he remains in vogue with the audience with two big hits in F2: Fun and Frustration and Venky Mama, where he played the lead in both no mean feat at 59.

With lineup that these megastars have in 2020, we expect them to rule the roost yet again with several other big names like Surya (not the best 2019), Mahesh Babu (average 2019, Jr. NTR and Allu Arjun (both absent in 2019) likely to join them.
