Troubled childhood

Nicki Minaj's parents moved to the US from the Caribbean when she was quite young. She came to the US two years after them. Life, however, wasn't as beautiful as she had dreamt of. She said in an interview, "(When I went to New York) I thought it was gonna be like a castle. Like white picket fence, like a fairytale. I got off the plane and it was cold. I remember the smell. I could always remember the smell when I got out of the airport of the snow, and I had never seen snow. I remember the house. I remember that the furniture wasn't put down. It was, like, piled up on each other, and I didn't understand why, 'cause I thought it was gonna look like a big castle." Her dream did not materialise as her father soon got into substance abuse. She further said, "All of my young and teenage years we lived in fear that my mother would be killed by my father. It was ridiculous. My father was violent- physically and verbally." Her father even burnt down their home.

Indian connection

Nicki Minaj's real name is Onika Tanya Maraj and she was born in Trinidad. Her father, Robert Maraj is of Indo-Trinidadian origins while her mom, Carol is of Trindadian and African descent. She said on the CBS Love Show in 2013, "My real last name is Maraj. My father is half-Indian and makes the best chicken curry in the world."

The Barbie fascination

Nicki Minaj also revealed the story behind the Harajuku Barbie. She said she would imagine herself as a new person to escape the fact that her parents were constantly fighting. Her first identity was Cookie and the second one was 'Harajuku Barbie'. She stated that fantasy was her reality. Nicki Minaj is her stage name and she portrays herself as a Barbie.
