BL Predicts: Jaawani Jaaneman set to take a low opening at the box office

As another Friday approached, it's time to take a look at the upcoming film releases, and if you're a box-office enthusiast, then the numbers game is something that's bound to take your fancy. This week we have Saif Ali Khan and Tabu starrer Jawaani Jaaneman hitting screens, which also marks the launch of Pooja Bedi's daughter and Kabir Bedi's granddaughter, Alaya F. So what are the biggest drawing factors and drawbacks of the film pre-release, and how are they expected to affect its box-office numbers? Let's take a look:

We spoke to eminent trade analyst Vishek Chauhan who's of the opinion that Jawaani Jaaneman is set for a low opening primarily due to its leading man and treatment. According to his expertise, Saif Ali Khan is a spent force as leading-man material, with none of his releases from 2013 onward, including Bullett Raja, Humshakals, Happy Ending, Phantom, Rangoon, Chef, Kaalakaandi, Baazaar or Laal Kaptaan clicking with the audience. In fact, some of them have been outright disasters. That's a deplorable track record for any actor to have, and Chauhan opined that Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior's roaring success, in which Saif isn't the main character, won't have much of an effect on his latest film's fortunes.

He also feels that the oddball comedy touch and urban treatment of the film, similar to several of Saif's recent releases, won't provide a connect with most viewers beyond few metro multiplexes, plus, the biggest trump card of the film, Tabu, has been consigned to the background during the promos, which will further affect the collections. Instead, the makers have fixated on new star kid, Alaya F, whose social-media popularity is unlikely to transcend to movie tickets a fact proven by other films and actors who've riden the pre-release social-media wave. In short, the fact that Saif is no longer leading-man material and the makers having not marketed their biggest drawing factor, Tabu, is bound to severely hurt the film's opening.

Based on these factors, Vishek Chauhan feels that the film will open at no more than Rs. 2-3 crore nett at the box office, after which, the only thing that can save it is fantastic word-of-mouth. If the WOM doesn't come into play, then Jawaani Jaaneman will just about touch Rs. 10 cr nett at the very most in its first weekend, following which it's likely to fall flat. Coming to the other Bollywood release of the week, Happy Hardy and Heer, Chauhan believes that it's going to be a complete non-starter at the box office.
