Filmy Friday: With Coolie No 1 and Ekkis, birthday boy Varun Dhawan is set to impress with his massy avatar all over again

The massy superstar of Bollywood, Varun Dhawan is celebrating his 33rd birthday today. In his career spanning eight years, the actor has impressed us by donning various hats and nailing each character with his acting mettle. From doing out and out comic roles in films like Judwaa 2 and Main Tera Hero, to play serious characters in Badlapur and October, Varun has proved that he is a director's actor and can mould himself as per the filmmaker's vision. While his last few films failed to fulfil the expectations of the audience, we are sure that he will bounce back with his upcoming ventures. So, let's check them out...

Coolie No 1

Varun Dhawan, Sara Ali Khan and Paresh Rawal starrer Coolie No 1, which is the remake of Govinda and Karisma Kapoor starrer 1995 comedy film of the same name, was supposed to hit the screens on May 1. The film has been pushed indefinitely due to global crisis of coronavirus. The makers have recreated one of the iconic tracks for the remake, which is Mein Toh Raste Se Ja Raha Tha. It is composed by Tanishk Bagchi. Talking about the track, director David Dhawan said, "It is an important song for our film, and it has heart. But times have changed so I am going to picturise it very differently with Varun and Sara." Recalling the original track, the filmmaker said, "We found a place in Bangalore with lot of Bhel Puri stalls and had the lead pair (Govinda and Karisma) strolling through it, exploring 'Mumbai'. I thought it was the best way to capture the essence of the Maximum City back then."

Ekkis

After Badlapur, Sriram Raghavan is collaborating with Varun Dhawan for a biographical war drama, which is based on the youngest Param Vir Chakra recipient, Arun Khetarpal. The film is titled Ekkis and is produced by Dinesh Vijan under his banner Maddock Films. Talking about this war drama, Varun had earlier said, "When I heard Arun Khetarpal's story, I was awed that this could have actually happened! I understood then why Dinoo (Dinesh Vijan) and Sriram are so passionate about it. When I met Arun's brother Mukesh, I was moved. I too have a brother and I can't understand what he must have gone through."
