Sonu Sood, COVID-19 warrior: Here's how an onscreen villain has metamorphosed into a real-life messiah

He may have aced villainous characters in Dabangg and Simmba on screen, but in real life, Sonu Sood has proven to be a real-life hero to migrant workers if ever there was one. With hundreds of thousands stranded far from home with no recourse to their means of livelihood, food or shelter in sight, they were compelled to take arduous journeys on foot, traversing uncountable miles, in the faint hope of reuniting with their families in their villages. With the possibility too remote and the risks too high, Sonu Sood entered the fray, without horse or armour, but a shining knight nevertheless, spreading his wings as far and wide as he could to create a cauldron as large and deep as conceivable, where the needy could feel safe again.

Busses were arranged, food was distributed, water was provided and one lot of migrants after another were shipped home. A recent interview Sonu Sood had given to Republic World, tells us all we need to know about the man:s heart. "I told migrants that they are like my family and they will not go home walking. Hence, I arranged transportation for them. No need for much documentation. Bring medical certificate, destination, and your ID proof and you will be at your home. This is not just their problem, this is our problem too," Sonu Sood had said.

Further explaining why he has gone to such lengths for them, the actor added, "When I saw them on the road that they were travelling with kids, barefoot and without food, I got very emotional. I am personally in touch with the state government and requesting them to give us permission and provide them with every document. Gods and Angels are the ones who are going to their home. Those who are helping are only normal people, including me." And amidst all this, he had even ensured that social-distancing norms and other guidelines were maintained, highlighting how self-aware the man is. "One bus with a capacity of 52 people is holding around 25 people currently. We are following the norms. Have to maintain social distancing and are teaching everyone on how to maintain social distance," he emphasised.

Ever since the first bus was dispatched, with the actor personally overseeing all the arrangements, his Twitter account and phone hasn't stopped buzzing, and he's ensured that every last one who's sought a helping hand, hasn't been sent away disappointed (at least to the best of his abilities). Just scroll below to see for yourself how he's been going out of his way to personally look into the needs of the destitute...

Of course, his efforts have been showered with praise by everyone from his fellow fraternity members to politicians to international sports personalities...

Fellow MP Ravi Kishan echoed her thoughts in his tweet, where he wrote: "Yehi sab yaad rehta hai duniya mein (all this is remembered in the world)".

That's not all though: Sonu has getting calls and messages 24x7 for PPE kits, food rations and other daily essentials and he's assembled a team to ensure that a swift helping hand is extended to all those seeking respite. Stalls have been set up at highways and important checkpoints for easy distribution to all those in need. Heck, he and his team are even stopping migrants midway, who haven't been able to reach out to him, and coaxing them to forgo their journey on foot for a better option being handed to them on a platter.

It's not that difficult though to do all this if one has the money, heart and will to see it through. And one of the prime reasons why Sonu Sood has succeeded where governments have failed in offering basic succour is because he's the sole decision-maker. All he had to do was secure the necessary bureaucratic permits, and his plan was good to go no middle men, no greasing of palms, no swathes of red tape to surpass. Just the desire to help and satisfaction to get the job done.

Is it any surprise then that Sonu Sood is India's new favourite son, probably enjoying the same level of love that Sachin Tendulkar had sent the Aussies scuttling to every corner of the cricket field in the Sharjah tournament back in 1998 or the kind of mass hysteria that MS Dhoni had witnessed after tonking that six over long on to win India the ODI Cricket World Cup in 2011. Terms like 'messiah', 'knight in shining armour', 'India's biggest hero', 'real Bollywood hero' (this one's a bit unfair to others who've also done their bit), 'nation's heartthrob', 'king of the masses' or even 'God of the needy' are no longer being sparingly thrown around. Rather such lyrical is being waxed over the actor in abundance, and rightly so. Hats off to you, Mr. Sood.
