Filmy Friday: From Mission Mangal to Ek Tha Tiger, Bollywood made the most of Independence Day weekend by raking in the moolah

Just like Diwali, Christmas or Eid, even Independence Day is considered to be a jackpot slot for the filmmakers as audiences rush to theatres on the national holiday, which gives a huge boost to a film at the box office. While we have witnessed many clashes of the biggies right from Sholay-Jai Santoshi Maa, Gold-Satyameva Jayate to Mission Mangal-Batla House during I-Day weekend, for the first time, there won't be any release during this period due to the pandemic situation of COVID-19. However, to justify the significance of this day in Bollywood, we share with you five biggest blockbusters of Hindi cinema, which released during this special day.

Mission Mangal - Rs 203 crore

Akshay Kumar, Vidya Balan, Kirti Kulhari, Sharman Joshi, Sonakshi Sinha and Nithya Menen starrer Mission Mangal locked horns with John Abraham starrer Batla House at the ticket windows in 2019. Despite clashing, the slice-of-life space drama opened to a thunderous response at the box office and went on to earn Rs 203 crore at the domestic market. In fact, it was the first film of Khiladi Kumar to enter the Rs 200 crore club.

Ek Tha Tiger - Rs 198 crore

Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif's espionage thriller, which released during Independence Day in 2012, also took advantage of Ramadan, which arrived a few days after the film's release. Despite getting mixed-reviews, the film turned out to be a box office winner due to Salman's insane fan base and missed the Rs 200 crore mark just by a few crore.

Singham Returns - Rs 140 crore

Akshay Kumar and Bhumi Pednekar's satirical social drama Toilet: Ek Prem Katha released in 2017 during the Independence Day weekend. Due to positive reviews, the film emerged as a box office winner with the collections of more than Rs 135 crore.

Rustom - Rs 129 crore

And we have another Akshay Kumar movie, which emerged an Independence Day blockbuster. We are talking about Rustom, which released in 2016. Despite clashing with Hrithik Roshan's Mohenjo Daro, it emerged victorious at the ticket windows. Akshay Kumar went on to win the National Award for his portrayal in this film.
