Tuesday Trivia: Did you know Rupali Ganguly had landed the role of Monisha in Sarabhai VS Sarabhai without an audition?
Sarabhai vs Sarabhai remains one of the most loved Indian sitcoms ever. If you haven't yet watched it yet, go watch it on the OTT platform where it's currently streaming we bet you'll love it. 90s kids loved the show no end and it was a huge hit back then, too. It came back in 2017 for a limited season of 10 episodes on a popular OTT platform, and we're still eagerly waiting for another season. However, the show is still a hit among the masses. Each character has a uniqueness and they're all equally popular. Be it socialite Maya (Ratna Pathak Shah), middle-class Monisha (Rupali Ganguly), Naradmuni Indravadan (Satish Shah), simpleton Sahil (Sumeet Raghavan) or quirky Rosesh (Rajesh Kumar) everyone has a separate fan-base and we love them all.
A couple of weeks ago, RJ Anmol had gathered the five lead cast members for a virtual get-together, and needless to say, it was a blast. During the live interaction on his FB page, Anmol had asked them various questions and also extracted some amazing trivia. Today though, we will be focusing on Monisha Sarabhai aka Rupali Ganguly's audition for the show.
"Mera bohot vichitra tha. Aatish bhai (Aatish Kapadia) ne Sanjeevani dekhi this. Tab main vamp ka role kar rahi thi. Aur uhnone ek scene koi dekha, 5 minute ka scene, jisme meri saas aur meri jo souten thi, wo dono baat kar rahi hai aur main beech mein khade khade (starts giving mean vamp-kind expressions). To Aatish bhai ko laga ye to bohot achhi comedy karti hai. To unhone kisiko Sanjeevani ke set pe ye (narration) sunane ke liye bheja. Aur ye Khichdi wale bana rahe hai. Aur Khichdi mera favorite show tha. To wahan pe Dipesh had come to narrate the script. Uss samay mujhe saare vamps ke hi roles offer hote the. Sarabhai bhi comedy hai aisa nahi bataya tha mujhe. Aur jis tarah se Dipesh ne mujhe sunaya, mujhe laga soap hai. (I had a bizarre audition. Aatish sir had seen a 5 minute episode of Sanjeevani in which I played the role of a vamp. In that scene, my mother-in-law and the other woman were talking and I was giving out expressions. So he thought she does good comedy. So he sent someone for narration. The makers of Khichdi were making this show and Khichdi happened to be my favourite. So Dipesh had come to narrate the story and that time I was only being offered roles of vamps. They did not tell me that it was a comedy show. And the way Dipesh narrated it to me, I thought it will be a daily-soap," she reminisced.
"Jab maine pucha sasur kaun bane hai, to bola Satish ji aur beta kaun hai to Sumeet. Mujhe laga mujhe negative role hi offer karenge. (I asked) Par main Sumeet ki maa kaise lagungi? To he called up Aatish bhai in front of me and said, 'Yeh mujhko puch rahi hai aisa.' To unhone mujhe sankraman ke liye bulaya. To meri Indica hoti thi. Indica mein saaman sab bhara hota tha to main gaadi aise (mimicks, crouching in a corner) chalati thi. To main bahar nikali. Main Sanjeevani wale dress mein gayi thi wo suit-woot peheke, short hair ekdam. Aur gaadi mein se nikali aur gir gayi. To Aatish bhai ne pucha ye teri gaadi aisi hi rehti hai? Maine bola kabhi kabhi rehti hai. To bole nai aise humesha rehti hogi. Maine bola haan, humesha rehti hai. To bole theek hai, audition nahi karna hai. (I asked who is playing father-in-law? He said, Satish Shah and son? Sumeet. I thought its a negative role and I had asked, 'How will I play mother to Sumeet?' So, he called up Aatish bhai in front of me and said, 'She is asking me this'. So, the next day, he called me for a meeting. That time I owned an Indica (car). It was always filled with some or other things. So, I used to crouch and drive. I reached in my Sanjeevani get up and as soon as I stepped out of the car, I fell down. So, Aatish sir asked me whether my car is always this messy. I said, 'Sometimes.' But he insisted again, and I said, 'Yes.' So he then said, 'There's no need for an audition.'" Have a look at their full session with RJ Anmol below:
