Filmy Friday: In 2019, Hollywood has dominated Bollywood like never before, courtesy Avengers: Endgame, The Lion King and other films
2019 is on its ways to bid us goodbye and as a cinema lover, we are grateful to Bollywood for giving us the perfect mixed bag of commercial entertainers and content-driven films. While Total Dhamaal, War, Housefull 4 and others worked on star power, films like Article 15, Bala, Uri and others attracted footfalls due to their strong content. Well, accepting of all that, we can't deny the fact that this year totally belonged to Hollywood as it dominated Hindi films in a huge way and saw the films from the West shattering box office records left, right and centre.
Top Hollywood grosser of 2019
Avengers: Endgame - Rs 373.22 crore
The Lion King - Rs 158.71 crore
Spider-Man: Far From Home - Rs 86.11 crore
Captain Marvel - Rs 84.36 crore
Fast And Furious Presents: Hobbs And Shaw - Rs 75.85 crore
Joker - Rs 67.95 crore
Aladdin - Rs 55.73 crore
Frozen 2 - Rs 42.47 crore
Anabelle Comes Home - Rs 30.08 crore
Godzilla 2 - Rs 25.30 crore
Shazam - Rs 21.10 crore
Starting with Avengers: Endgame, the Marvel superhero flick, which is currently the highest worldwide grossing film of all-time, is also the highest grosser of 2019 in India. Yes, you read that right, none of the Hindi films has crossed the Rs 350 crore mark this year and this Russo Brothers' directorial venture sits right at the top of the box office table. The Lion King, which is a photorealistic computer-generated film, collected Rs 158.71 crore at the domestic market and mind you, these collections are greater than Bollywood biggies like Total Dhamaal, Kesari, Saaho, Super 30, Chhichhore and Gully Boy.
If you calculate, 15 Hollywood releases have raked in around Rs 1050 crore, which is much better, when we compare the average business of our Bollywood films. So, by analysing the scenario, we can definitely say that Hollywood has given Bollywood a run for its money.
In 2020, we have many English biggies like Dolittle, No Time To Die, The Gentleman, Bloodshot, Black Widow, Fast And Furious 9, Wonder Woman 1984, Top Gun: Maverick, Tenet, Venom 2 and others, which can give a stiff competition to Hindi and regional films at the box office.
