BL Predicts: Angrezi Medium set for a decent opening due to Irrfan Khan's star-power and a wave of sentimentality

As another Friday fast approaches, it's time to take a look at the upcoming Bollywood release. This week we have Irrfan Khan starrer, Angrezi Medium, and if you love numbers and everything about the box office, then boy, have we got a treat for you with our latest round of BL Predicts, where we take a look at the potential opening day, opening week and lifetime collections of a movie. So, what our the biggest drawing factors and drawbacks of Irrfan's Angrezi Medium and how could they affect the film's box office numbers? Let's find out...

First things first, the biggest advantage for Angrezi Medium is Irrfan Khan himself, as the actor has legit star-power in his own right, capable of running offbeat and indie films unlike many other of his contemporaries. He has proven his pull at the box office with films like Paan Singh Tomar, Talvar, Madaari and the predecessor of the film we're talking about, Hindi Medium. The first part did not take that a big opening though (Rs. 2.821 crore nett) and built on its word-of-mouth en route to commercial success, just like all of Irrfan's films do.

However, we're expecting Angrezi Medium to take a much bigger opening of Rs. 6-7 crore nett, due to a.) The goodwill built by Hindi Medium, b.) A very well-received trailer, c.) Kareena Kapoor's addition to the cast even though in it's an extended cameo as you can never underestimate her box office pull and d.) The wave of sentimentality with Irrfan, with almost the entire nation knowing what he's gone through and seeing this as his comeback film of sorts. An opening in the range we've predicted should give the film a decent start, and if the reviews and word-of-mouth are conducive, then it should touch Rs. 24-26 crore nett for its first weekend, which would be a very respectable figure.

Angrezi Medium has a landing cost of approximately Rs. 40 crore (including print and advertising). Based on its budget, and more importantly, the amount it has been sold to its distributors (a substantial chunk would have already been recovered by the makers via digital, satellite and ancillary sources), the film would be termed a clean hit if it ends up collecting anywhere between Rs. 70-75 crore nett. If it's lifetime collection touches Rs. 90 crore nett, the Irrfan Khan-Radhika Madan-Deepak Dobriyal starrer would earn superhit status, and anything upward of Rs. 110 crore nett would make it blockbuster.
