'Saroj Khan ji could even make actors like Sunny Deol, Ajay Devgn and Anil Kapoor dance,' says choreographer Terence Lewis

Popular choreographer Terence Lewis, who became a household name after Dance India Dance, has resumed the work of his ongoing show India's Best Dancer along with other judges Geeta Kapur and Malaika Arora amid COVID-19 crisis. Talking about that, Terence told Mumbai Mirror, "I have to admit that we have all become more efficient in the present scenario; we're working in the Akshay Kumar-style." In the latest episode, we saw dancers giving tribute to legends and Terence gave Rs 101 to one of the contestants, which late choreographer Saroj Khan used to do as a tradition. "In 2007, I did a show called Dance Dance which had Sarojji, Vaibhavi Merchant and me as the judges and Geeta as a backstage choreographer. It wasn't appreciated much, but we forged a connection and I went on to appear on her show, Nachle Ve," revealed Terence.

The choreographer also revealed that she was impressed by his contemporary dance style. "She was motherly to me, but I was still terrified because Saroj Khan was an institution in herself," asserted Terence. "She could even make actors like Sunny Deol, Ajay Devgn and Anil Kapoor dance and it's thanks to her that choreographers came to be noticed in the film industry and their work appreciated by the audience," said the dancer. Terence also revealed that he had told Saroj Khan that he would love to make a film on her, to which she replied, "Iwished to make a film on her journey, but she was not excited. She told me it would be too scandalous," he recalls that at the age of 14 during her pregnancy she was made to teach Vyajanthimala some dance steps for a song "The same day, she delivered. She lost her daughter and went through so much, but it's a tribute to her grit that a child artiste Nirmala Devi went on to become Saroj Khan, an alpha figure in a male-dominated industry, thanks to whom award shows began to honour choreographers. I hope someone makes the film someday."
